Kittens are adorable, fun and unique pet but it is important to consider that taking on a kitten is a commitment for its lifetime which maybe 15-20years. If you are considering adopting a kitten, know that ideally, kittens should stay with their mother until they are completely weaned.
Unweaned kittens no longer rely on their mother, kittens are usually weaned at six to eight weeks old. During these early stages, the kitten also learns from their mother what sorts of play are appropriate.
Kitten care: Best kitten care routines
When it is time to bring your kitten home, these are the best kitten care routines you should bear in mind.
PREPARE YOUR HOME
Before you get a cat, take some time to create a friendly and safe home. It is essential at least to provide one quiet safe place for your cat to retreat and hide so that they can feel safe. Provide easily accessible resources including more than one scratching post, multiple litter trays and plenty of opportunities for play.
FEEDING YOUR KITTEN
Before you get a kitten, ensure you will be able to provide them with an appropriate diet. Kittens should have access to freshwater and commercial kitten foods to make sure that their nutritional requirements are met. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid feeding more than the total daily recommended amount as this can lead to obesity.
BE CONCERNED OF YOUR KITTEN’S HEALTH
Finding a local vet is and building a relationship with them before you get a kitten is very important. Due to kitten’s small body size and their immature immune system, kittens health can deteriorate very easily, so it is important to be able to take them straight to the vet if they are unwell.
Kittens should receive vaccination from 8 to 9 weeks of age with the second vaccination around 12weeks to protect them against diseases.
Kittens love to play but do not encourage bad behaviour such as rough play, or biting. This behaviour won’t be good when your kitten grows up. Gentle but informed communication is needed to put your kitten on the right track.
It is important not to show impatience or irritation at this stage. Bad habit grows with repetitions and is easily forgotten when replaced with positive behaviours using interactive toys.
Whether you have a short or a long-haired cat, it is important to groom them regularly so they get used to the feeling of being brushed. Grooming will help your kitten’s coat to be neat and healthy.
Grooming is also a great way to bond with your kitten and is used as an opportunity to check for injuries or lumps in their body.
